Is the Exclusion of the LGBTQ+ community from the MRTA’s Social Equity Program blatant discrimination, homophobia or oversight?

The LGBTQ+ community has been excluded from the MRTA’s Social & Economic Equity Program (SEEP) as a recognized and eligible participant. The origins of cannabis legalization is forever linked to the fearless activism of the LGBTQ+ community and its need to protect and care for our people as they suffered and died from both the AIDS epidemic and prosecution under the failed “war on drugs” and cannabis prohibition.  Exclusion from the SEEP marginalizes and perpetrates systemic governmental discrimination based upon sexual orientation and gender identity and establishes a formidable barrier for LGBTQ+ Entrepreneurs to enter and participate in NY’s legal Cannabis market.  This exclusion highlights the LGBTQ+ community’s struggle for equality, acceptance, and tolerance and belies the MRTA SEEP’s mission to foster diverse ownership and participation in NY’s burgeoning cannabis market.  The LGBTQ+ community has been fighting against discrimination and marginalization for millennia and now our struggle to achieve inclusion, acceptance, and equal rights has found its way into cannabis legalization.   The LGBTQ+ Community includes people from all races, from all ethnicities, from all genders, and from all geographic localities and including this vibrant community will promote racial, ethnic, and gender diversity within the market.
